Tip: knight.mdl wireframe consists of 213 triangles, almost 50% less than the 408 triangles of the player.mdl.
To gain a little extra speed (2-3%), extract the knight.mdl fron ID's PAK0.PAK, rename it to player.mdl and place it in a dir called "progs" inside the gamedir of desire
The deathframes of player.mdl and knight.mdl are incompatible, so unless you want a lot of standing corpses, which can be mistaken for other players, use should be restricted to patches with "dead body filter", such as the Frogbot modifications found on this site, and TheMod. The knight.mdl will show no playercolors, so it will be ill suited for teamplay.
Rocketarena mods (incl ObotArena) will do fine, since deathframes aren't used (players die as gibs)

which gives a small boost to rendering speed (and we all need that, don't we?) - Enjoy this patch!
